What is the difference between Fort Myers and Fort Myers Beach?

Two different places with a confusing shared name
They are separate municipalities. The City of Fort Myers sits inland along the river and includes the downtown River District, the Edison & Ford Winter Estates, and the McGregor Boulevard corridor. The Town of Fort Myers Beach occupies Estero Island, connected by the Matanzas Pass Bridge via San Carlos Boulevard.
The drive between the two takes about 30 minutes without traffic and considerably longer on high-season afternoons, when the bridge and San Carlos Boulevard back up.
Which to book
If your trip is fundamentally a beach holiday, stay on the island and accept the higher rates and the parking situation. If you plan to split time between beaches, Sanibel, day trips and dining, the mainland is cheaper, better positioned and less congested.
