How far is Sanibel Island from Fort Myers?

The only road on is the Sanibel Causeway
There is one land route to Sanibel: the three-span Sanibel Causeway off McGregor Boulevard in south Fort Myers. Everything funnels through it, which is why drive times swing so widely — the same 23 miles takes 40 minutes at 8am and closer to 75 minutes on a February Saturday at 11am.
The causeway toll is collected in one direction only (onto the island). Leaving Sanibel is free, so budget the toll once per trip, not per crossing.
- Downtown Fort Myers to Sanibel: ~23 miles, 40–55 minutes
- RSW airport to Sanibel: ~18 miles, 35–50 minutes
- Fort Myers Beach to Sanibel: ~18 miles, 40–60 minutes (no direct bridge — you drive back inland)
- Captiva Island: add another 25–35 minutes past Sanibel
When the causeway backs up
Traffic onto Sanibel peaks between 9:30am and noon in high season (January through April) and again outbound between 4pm and 6pm. If you are day-tripping, cross before 9am or after 2pm and you will usually drive straight through the toll plaza.
Beach parking on Sanibel fills before the causeway does. On peak-season mornings, the Lighthouse and Bowman's Beach lots are full by 10am even when the bridge is moving freely.
