Why the geography forces a car

Fort Myers is not one walkable town. Downtown, the McGregor corridor, Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel, Cape Coral and Bonita Springs each sit 15–40 minutes apart, and the attractions people actually come for — Bowman's Beach, Lovers Key, the Edison & Ford Winter Estates, Matlacha — are strung along that whole distance.

LeeTran buses do run, but headways of 45–60 minutes and indirect routing make them impractical for a short vacation. There is no rail.

When you can genuinely skip the rental

A no-car trip works if you are staying on Fort Myers Beach near Times Square or at a full-service Sanibel resort, plan to spend most days on the sand, and are happy to use the seasonal trolley, bikes and the occasional rideshare for dinner.

Sanibel in particular is the one place where bikes replace a car well — the island has more than 25 miles of paved shared-use path connecting beaches, the lighthouse and the shopping villages.

What a rental actually costs versus rideshare

A midsize rental from RSW typically runs $45–80 per day in high season and $30–50 in summer, before parking. A single Uber from RSW to Fort Myers Beach is usually $45–65 one way — two airport transfers plus a few dinners out will exceed a week's rental in most cases.
