Estimates only, based on the lunitidal interval for the Sanibel area and typically within 30–45 minutes of published predictions. Confirm exact times with the NOAA Point Ybel or Redfish Pass tide station before you plan around them.

Best shelling beaches near Fort Myers

    • Bowman's Beach (Sanibel) — the deepest shell lines and the quietest sand.
    • Blind Pass / Turner Beach — strong current between Sanibel and Captiva churns up larger shells.
    • Lighthouse Beach (Sanibel) — easy access and consistent finds at the east end.
    • Cayo Costa — boat-only, and the best shelling in Florida for the effort.

    Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to go shelling on Sanibel?

The best shelling on Sanibel is during the hour either side of low tide, ideally a spring low tide within a day or two of a new or full moon, and best of all the morning after a winter cold front pushes westerly wind onto the island.

Why is Sanibel so good for shelling?

Sanibel runs east-to-west rather than north-to-south, so its beaches act as a scoop catching shells carried by Gulf currents from the south and west. A wide, shallow shelf offshore deposits them intact.

Is it legal to take shells from Sanibel?

Empty shells may be collected on Sanibel and Captiva, but taking live shelling — any shell with a living animal inside, including live sand dollars, starfish, and sea urchins — is illegal in Lee County and carries a fine.

How accurate is this tide estimate?

These times are estimates from the lunitidal interval for the Sanibel area, typically within 30–45 minutes of the published NOAA prediction. Confirm exact times with the NOAA Point Ybel or Redfish Pass station before planning around them.
